Jacques Le-Gouis

Jacques Le Gouis

About him:

Dr. Jacques Le Gouis is a senior scientist at INRA Clermont-Ferrand, leading a research group on wheat adaptation to abiotic constraints. This multidisciplinary group is interested in the genetic determinism and molecular mechanisms controlling grain development, protein concentration and composition in response to nitrogen deficiency and climatic factors. To achieve this he leads the BreedWheat project which is the integrated wheat research programme for France. This project integrates high throughput genotyping, phenotyping, physiological studies and modeling to decipher the genetic and ecophysiological bases of major traits for Northern Europe. He is also involved in the Phenome-Emphasis project with the objective to provide France with an up-to-date, versatile, high throughput infrastructure and suite of methods allowing characterisation of panels of genotypes of different species under scenarios associated with climate changes. At the international level, he participates to the Wheat Initiative research committee and expert working group on Nutrient Use Efficiency.

About his talk:

"How changes in climate and agricultural practices influence wheat production"

A decline in the growth trend of cereal yields is observed in several countries. Changes in climatic conditions, agricultural practices and the genetic progress have been proposed to explain this observation. We will review these possible causes based on analyses conducted in Northern Europe and particularly France.
